Treatment Options for Patients with Spontaneous Bone Spurs
If the patient is symptomatic with pain, you can try to remove the spicule with tissue forceps.
On occasion, one must anesthetize the patient and remove it surgically because the spicule is much larger than the opening in the tissue.
If the patient is asymptomatic, they can elect to wait for natural exfoliation of the area.
If ulcerations or swelling is present around the spicule, you may want to consider systemic antibiotics, antibacterial mouth rinse, and/or topical steroid cream with an analgesic.
You can also treat the area with low-level light therapies using a laser to help with pain management and promote faster healing.
