Wildfires and another link between the mouth and lungs

The devastating wildfires in the United States are all over the news and likely on the minds of your patients

One of the best ways to introduce a conversation is to find a point of shared knowledge. That can include events in the news, such as the wildfires that have devastated so many in the western United States and caused unhealthy air quality up and down the West Coast.

So what does this have to do with your dental patient? Well, other than small talk, it might be a good time to see if that patient or anyone in his or her family has breathing issues, including asthma.

A study recently came out connecting oral health and asthma. This might create an opening for a discussion with your patients … or one of their family members.

Here’s a link to a synopsis of the study that might make for a good and productive conversation.
