Professional Development that Actually Works

Professional development is one of the top five benefits dental professionals are looking for from their employers, according to our research, which surveyed over 1,000 dental professionals across the country.

But there’s a catch: development cannot be forced. As a leader, you can’t care about someone’s development more than them. The best growth happens when it is learner-led and leader-supported.

For dental practice owners, that means shifting from mandating courses to creating an environment where curiosity and career growth can thrive. Your role as a leader is to chart the path, provide resources, and then step aside to let your team grow.

What can you do to spark growth and give the nudge people need? 

Continuing Education

Continuing education (CE) is the most obvious form of development, but it is not the only one. Nor should it be treated as a box to check.

Connect CE courses to your practice’s goals. Encourage team members to attend classes that solve a business challenge or introduce ideas to improve patient care and efficiency. Then, have them share what they learned with the rest of the team so the entire practice benefits.

Daily Development

Professional development does not always come from a classroom. Sometimes it happens through exposure, collaboration, or problem-solving. Here are a few powerful, low-cost ways to develop your team:

  • Job shadowing or cross-training. Great for those who want to broaden their skills or explore another role.
  • Observation hours. Allow a team member to watch a specific procedure or process to understand how others contribute. This builds empathy and teamwork.
  • Technology champions. Empower someone to learn new technology and make recommendations for implementation.
  • Mentorship. Pair experienced employees with new hires to pass along expertise and culture.
  • Cross-functional projects. Bring team members together to solve workflow issues. You will get better solutions, higher buy-in, and stronger engagement.

The key is to offer the opportunity and see who takes it. Those who volunteer are often your next leaders.

Building Career Pathways 

Career leveling can help retain top performers and differentiate talent. Define the knowledge, skills, and attributes that represent each level of success in your practice. Be sure to include values and cultural behaviors in those definitions. You want to reward great people, not just great producers.

Motivated team members will rise to the occasion when they can see what is possible. Your job is to show them the roadmap.

Rewarding Growth

When someone develops new skills or adds measurable value, compensation should reflect that growth. Tie career leveling to proactive pay adjustments so your structure rewards contribution, not tenure alone.

For those who go above and beyond, consider a spot bonus or other form of meaningful recognition. These should be the exception, not the rule, but they send a clear message that progress matters.

Professional development is not about checking boxes or filling CE hours. It is about creating an environment where people want to grow and giving them the tools to do it.

When your team members see a future with your practice, they stay longer, contribute more, and deliver better patient care. That is the kind of development that builds strong teams, thriving practices, and happier workplaces.
