But goal setting alone won’t guarantee success—execution and accountability are what truly move the needle.

With over 30 years of experience coaching dental teams, I’ve seen how the right blend of goal clarity, strategic planning, and team accountability can transform a practice.

In this article, I’ll guide you through setting achievable goals, ensuring your team stays aligned, and maintaining accountability throughout the year. 

Step 1: Set SMART Goals for Your Practice 

Before you can hold your team accountable, you need to establish clear, specific goals. The SMART framework is an effective method to ensure your goals are well-defined and actionable: 

  • Specific: Clearly state what you want to achieve. 
  • Measurable: Attach numbers or metrics to track progress. 
  • Achievable: Ensure the goal is realistic given your current resources.
  • Relevant: Align goals with your practice’s overall mission. 
  • Time-bound: Set a deadline for achieving each goal. 

Examples of SMART goals for a dental practice: 

  • Increase new patient acquisition by 20% within the first six months. 
  • Reduce the no-show rate by 10% by the end of Q1. 
  • Improve case acceptance rate to 75% by the end of the year.
