How to Stay Sane During December’s Patient Rush: A Dentist’s Guide to Balance

By: Dr. Sable Muntean

December is a special kind of chaos for dental professionals. It’s the perfect storm: patients trying to use the last of their insurance benefits, parents squeezing in appointments before school break, and an endless stream of “Can you fit me in before the holidays?” messages. The pressure hits fast, and hard.

If you’re a dentist feeling the crunch, you’re not alone. Here’s how to stay balanced, productive, and sane when your schedule is stacked and your patience is thinning.

1. Stop Saying “Yes” to Everything

December brings urgent requests, but not every request needs to become your emergency.
Setting boundaries protects both your schedule and your mental health. Try:

  • Reserving one small block each day for true emergencies
  • Training your team to say: “We can fit you in next week, or we can add you to our cancellation list.”

Protect your time before the month begins—and keep protecting it as the chaos grows.

2. Communicate Clear Expectations With Patients

December patients often want miracles. A little clarity can go a long way:

  • Explain realistic timelines for treatments
  • Remind them that labs slow down during the holidays
  • Offer temporary solutions when full work can’t be completed

Clear communication keeps the month from turning into a string of misunderstandings.

3. Support Your Team (Because They’re Feeling It Too)

A stressed team leads to a stressed dentist. Boost morale by:

  • Starting morning huddles with quick wins from the day before
  • Bringing in a simple treat or hot chocolate bar once a week
  • Encouraging breaks, even short ones

A supported team creates calmer days—and happier patients.

4. Streamline Wherever Possible

December is not the time to complicate systems. Tiny improvements make a big difference:

  • Simplify scheduling rules
  • Reduce unnecessary admin steps
  • Use templated messages for common patient requests
  • Lean on digital forms and reminders

Every minute saved is a minute of sanity regained.

5. Don’t Neglect Your Own Health (Seriously)

Dentists tell patients daily to prioritize their health—yet December is when many dentists ignore their own. Try:

  • Drinking water between patients
  • Packing something nourishing instead of going 6 hours without food
  • Scheduling your own check-ins: stretching, a short walk, or a quiet moment between appointments

Your body and mind are the tools your practice runs on.

6. Create Easy, Restorative Evenings

December workdays drain energy. Evenings should refill it. Choose a simple nightly ritual:

  • A mindless TV show
  • A warm bath
  • A few minutes of journaling
  • Putting your phone on Do Not Disturb after a set hour

The key: Something that signals to your brain, “We’re done for the day.”

7. Remember: The Rush Ends

December always feels endless—but it isn’t. January arrives with its steady, predictable routines, and the overwhelm fades. Knowing there’s an endpoint can make the busiest days feel lighter.

Give yourself compassion, grace, and space. You’re serving your patients during their most hectic season; don’t forget to take care of yourself through it.

If you’re a dentist navigating December, you deserve balance. Protect your time, support your team, and give yourself permission to rest. You’ve got this.
