Clinical efficiency and business systems often take the spotlight. But during all that, it’s easy to overlook something fundamental: your individuality. I love this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.”

When we start practicing like others—or doing things “the way it’s always been done”—we may lose touch with the deeper meaning behind our work.

Integrity of thought and originality are vital not only for personal fulfillment, but also for patient-centered care.

The Cost of Conforming

I’ve noticed that when I default to routine or external expectations, I feel disconnected from my purpose. While it may be quicker in the moment, conformity can prevent us from seeing opportunities for growth and learning.

Authentic practice requires a willingness to pause, reflect, and listen to what truly matters—both clinically and personally.

A small but powerful habit I’ve adopted is keeping a photo of myself as a child on my desk. That image reminds me of who I’ve always been someone seeking meaning, acceptance, and connection.

This simple practice helps me show more compassion to myself, especially during times of stress or perceived failure. And when I extend that same compassion to my patients, the quality of our interaction changes.

How Authenticity Impacts Patient Relationships

When we stay aligned with our values and treat each patient as a whole person—not just a case—we create a practice that’s both fulfilling and sustainable.

It’s in these moments that dentistry becomes more than a profession. It becomes a calling—one that allows us to make a deeper impact in our communities while maintaining joy in our daily work.

As e.e Cummings once said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” In dentistry, that courage looks like slowing down, honoring your principles, and building a practice that reflects your true self.
