Financial Control: Profit With Purpose

Most dentists donโ€™t hate numbers โ€ฆ they just hate not knowing what they mean โ€ฆ and that sadly translates into pretending they donโ€™t exist. If you want to know how to lead your practice โ€ฆ and life by the numbers โ€ฆ keep reading because it turns out data โ€ฆ drives our best decisions.

Friends โ€ฆ financial control isnโ€™t about accounting. Itโ€™s about awareness, alignment, and action. Every number tells a story about where youโ€™re headed โ€ฆ and if Iโ€™ve learned anything about success, itโ€™s this โ€ฆ where you and I are headed is a trajectory.

Think about that before you keep reading โ€ฆ because trajectory means if youโ€™re on track โ€ฆ youโ€™re moving exponentially in the right direction toward success โ€ฆ and if youโ€™re not โ€ฆ if youโ€™re on the wrong trajectory โ€ฆ then 6 months from now โ€ฆ a year from now โ€ฆ youโ€™re actually further away from where you want to be.


Step 1: Re-define Profit

Production means nothing if youโ€™re not keeping it. Financial control starts when you stop asking, โ€œHow much did we make?โ€ and start asking, โ€œHow much did we keep, and why?โ€

Take off your dentist hat and think the CEO you are โ€ฆ true financial success is margin โ€ฆ not motion.


Step 2: Know Your 3 Financial Levers

Every thriving practice masters these three:

  • Collections โ€” what you actually get paid
  • Overhead โ€” what you spend to keep the lights on
  • Case Acceptance โ€” what converts from diagnosis to delivery

Focus on incremental growth over giant leaps. A 3% lift in each of the above levers adds more to your bottom line than most dentists realize.


Step 3: Build a 90-Day Dashboard

Numbers only create stress when you look at them without purpose โ€ฆ and stress is never our goal for you. Hereโ€™s what we see working very well in the practices we coach โ€ฆ a 90-day scorecard:

  • Monthly production goal โ€ฆ donโ€™t make this random โ€ฆ begin with what you want to take home and consider โ€ฆ
  • Your overhead % target. True tech, quality teams, and labs add to this. False, itโ€™s not worth every penny โ€ฆ
  • Hygiene & doctor hour benchmarks
  • Case acceptance rate โ€ฆ FYI, the national average for complete care case acceptance is sub-35%! We want you to be north of 65%. Run your numbers. See where you are and if youโ€™re average or below โ€ฆ CLICK HERE

Review it every month with your office manager.

โ“ Ask: Where are we winning? Where are we leaking? And why?

When you make data conversational โ€ฆ it becomes motivational.


Step 4: Lead Financial Conversations with Transparency

Stop hiding your numbers from your team out of fear theyโ€™ll believe youโ€™re banking millions โ€ฆ they think that already โ€ฆ so show them whatโ€™s real โ€ฆ and how all of your success at the practice โ€ฆ drives their self-determined future.

When your team feels that why โ€ฆ theyโ€™ll help you hit the what.

Example:
โ€œWhen we increase case acceptance by 5% โ€ฆ that gives us bandwidth to invest in new tech, more CE โ€ฆ and affords us all more time off.โ€


Step 5: Profit with Purpose

Moneyโ€™s not the goal. Freedom is.

Financial control gives you choices to invest in your team, your family, your growth, and your peace. Every decision, every system, every patient interaction is either compounding your freedom or costing it.
