Last month, I attended a restorative open house course at Ivoclar Vivadent’s North American Headquarters near Buffalo, NY. This hands on CE course covered direct restorations on the first day and indirect restorations on the second day.
One of the course presentations focused on cement choices for delivery of indirect restorations. If your dental school experience was similar to mine, you had dozens of pre-clinical lectures on crown prep design, cementation techniques, and biomaterials science. Then, when you finally started your first crown in the clinic you were given a select few options for cements and bonding agents. The choice was basically made for you. But once you’re out practicing independently, how will you decide which materials to use to lute your fixed restorations? Will you stick to the familiar cements you used in school or will you branch out to try other products? There are over 100 permanent cement brands on the market. How do you narrow it down to which are worth a try?
When it comes to taming the temporary restoration, there is no one size fits all situations. Anterior vs Posterior…Single unit vs Multiple…Crowns vs Veneers…Short term vs long: when you and I want to deliver our best to our patients, we need options.
Time…it’s arguably our most valuable commodity. You can make more of almost everything else in your dental practice when you think about it. So besides every other, well documented reason to stop impressioning and start scanning, let’s focus on what matters most…your time.
